Gomez holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, with a career spanning the Ariane rocket engine, the Porsche Carrera GT and Rolls-Royce waterjet engines before turning to vinyl replay.
He treats a pickup arm as a precision instrument, not a tuned musical instrument. Materials and geometries are chosen on the laws of physics and proven engineering practice — never on myth.
Special aerospace grades of carbon fibre are laid in a specific orientation, then autoclave-cured with the same equipment used for satellite composites — placing fibres exactly where stiffness must be highest. It is then CNC machined and sanded to achieve the final geometry and satin finish.
Moment of inertia, natural frequencies and modes are calculated before a part exists. Virtual design of experiments allows us to explore and evaluate a much greater number of designs to reach the optimal configuration when compared to traditional prototype testing.
A stiffer structure resonates at higher frequency and lower amplitude. The higher the resonance frequency, the less intrusive it is during playback. The CF1-09 tube has its first and second natural frequencies at 4 030 Hz and 9 000 Hz, keeping distortion out of the music.
